過去有文獻證實吸入型抗生素對於支氣管擴張(bronchiectasis)與囊狀纖維化(cystic fibrosis)的病人有幫助,故近年來臨床上許多醫師嘗試用吸入型抗生素來治療呼吸器相關肺炎(ventilator associated pneumonia, VAP)/支氣管(ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis, VAT),尤其是感染多重抗藥性病原菌的病人,但目前關於這方面療效的文獻並不多,且結果分歧,故去年歐洲感染症醫學會(European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases)做了系統性的回顧,依據證據強度做了些建議。總體來說,依據目前有的證據,並不建議在呼吸器相關肺炎的病人身上使用吸入型的抗生素,但日後仍需要更大型且設計嚴謹的研究證實。
