骨骼肌肉系統超音波檢查為一非侵入性，安全性高，且無放射性的診斷工具，臨床運用包括肌腱、韌帶、軟骨、關節腔發炎、水腫、小鈣化點，甚至肌肉病變、腫瘤、神經壓迫、血腫、肌肉肌腱斷裂等檢查。超音波導引治療應用廣泛，包括將軟組織內的積血或滑囊炎等所造成的液體積抽出、精準注射藥物治療、關節腔沾黏擴張治療、神經解套鬆動術治療等等。針對特定部位，超音波導引施打比起表面解剖學定位施打有更高的準確性。隨著技術上的提升，超音波對深層軟組織、鄰近血管神經的危險結構、頭頸部危險區域、頸胸腰椎關節及神經根之介入有更大的角色及幫助，對於表面解剖學定位施打失敗的個案，可以嘗試使用超音波導引介入治療。
