皮肌炎或多發性肌炎的患者，常常有皮膚以外的器官侵犯，其中最常見的包含間質性肺病。Anti-MDA-5抗體為皮肌炎患者中顯示預後較差的抗體之一，且亞洲的研究相對較歐美多。在皮肌炎合併anti-MDA-5抗體陽性病人中，常有較高的比例合併快速進展性的間質性肺病，進而導致呼吸衰竭及死亡。
