肋骨骨折為胸部外傷最常見的情況，而骨折引起的疼痛常造成肺炎及呼吸衰竭等併發症。早期肋骨骨折以保守治療為主，現今研究證實嚴重肋骨骨折如連枷胸接受肋骨固定手術可減少呼吸器使用時間、加護病房停留時間與住院天數，亦可減少肺炎發生率及氣切手術的需要性，進一步降低醫療成本。對於非連枷胸的肋骨骨折病人，早期接受肋骨固定手術有助於減少疼痛以及住院期間的肋膜腔併發症，並改善呼吸失能相關的生活品質。目前肋骨固定手術以微創鈦板固定方式為主，更能減少手術傷口長度與軟組織的傷害，進而減少病人疼痛加速病人恢復，縮短治療療程。
