小腦一直以來被視為運動控制系統,小腦在運動和平衡控制中扮演重要功用。但在過去的幾十年中,來自功能性磁振造影和臨床觀察的研究顯示小腦參與許多高階認知功能。在這篇文章中,我們總結許多小腦研究影像學證據,包括靜習態和任務性磁振造影(resting and task-based fMRI),以及小腦疾病模型的影像變化。研究發現小腦藉由大腦小腦迴路(cerebrocerebellar circuits)連結參與了大腦的認知功能作業。雖然我們仍然不知道小腦如何影響認知功能,但整合許多功能性神經影像學研究以及臨床小腦疾病之間的證據,我們可以更了解在不同認知功能中小腦扮演的角色。
