急性腎損傷是手術後常見的併發症之一，會對病人的預後產生不良影響。近年來對急性腎損傷定義的更新與生物標記的研究，使得此疾病能夠被更早診斷，及早介入治療。目前已知與手術後急性腎損傷相關的因素包括血流動力學不穩定、使用腎毒性藥物、有效血液容積不足、貧血或是使用體外循環等。針對年老或合併多重共病症的高風險族群，適時給予輸液治療、審慎評估藥物使用與維持適當的血紅素值，有機會改善病患的預後。一旦發生手術後急性腎損傷且合併藥物治療無法控制之體液容積過多、代謝性酸中毒或是電解質不平衡，則須考慮盡早給予透析治療。
