聚乙烯俗稱塑膠,主要分有低密度聚乙烯與高密度聚乙烯,而醫界懂得利用塑膠來開發人工髖關節墊片之後,人工髖關節手術自此開始獲得巨大的成功。雖然如此,人工髖關節在使用若干時日之後,墊片磨耗的問題還是造成了植入物的失效而需要再置換,開發更耐磨的人工髖關節便是目前臨床醫學最重要的課題之一。各個超耐磨墊片的臨床報告紛紛被發表,而超耐磨墊片是否能有效的降低重開率雖然並沒有一致的報告,但是利用超耐磨墊片來開發更符合人體原始結構的人工髖關節則是未來的趨勢。
