壞死性筋膜炎可由超過一種細菌引起，包括：A型鏈球菌、創傷弧菌、克雷伯桿菌屬、梭菌屬、大腸桿菌和金黃葡萄球菌。A型鏈球菌被認為是最常引致壞死性筋膜炎的細菌。壞死性筋膜炎是一種軟組織及肌肉筋膜的嚴重細菌感染。感染沿著筋膜擴散，並破壞組織，可能會導致肢體受損。嚴重的個案可致命。壞死性筋膜炎的患者可能會感到四肢或軀幹疼痛或腫痛。受感染的皮膚可能出現發熱及紅腫，而這些症狀會快速擴散。此外，患處可能會有潰瘍、水疱或黑點。疼痛的程度可能比可見的皮膚變化嚴重。患者亦可能會發燒、發冷、疲倦和嘔吐。引起壞死性筋膜炎的細菌通常透過皮膚中的傷口，如：切傷、刮傷、燒傷、昆蟲咬傷、穿刺傷口或手術傷口進入身體。由創傷弧菌引起的壞死性筋膜炎也可以由進食生或未徹底煮熟的海鮮，例如從和暖海水中捕獲的蠔而感染。任何人都可能患上壞死性筋膜炎。經常處理或直接接觸生的海鮮的人患上創傷弧菌引致的壞死性筋膜炎的風險會較高。如果是患有免疫系統受損的長期病患，例如：糖尿病、癌症、腎臟病和肝硬化，亦會增加感染的風險。立即接受適當的抗生素治療可殺死细菌。為了阻止感染擴散，患者或需接受外科手術，例如清除壞死組織或截肢。部份患者可能需要接受筋膜切開治療。
