當我們提到「博物館」時，大多數人第一個聯想到的可能是它的文化、教育功能，此外，我們或許會聯想到它在觀光與娛樂方面扮演的重要角色。然而，正如阿諾(Ken Arnold)博士的文章所指出，在歐洲學術史上，博物館曾經是舉足輕重的研究機構。今天少有人提到博物館時會馬上聯想到學術研究，更少為人知的是博物館在自然科學的歷史中，也扮演過重要的角色。本文就以十九世紀的博物館作為科學研究機構的黃金年代為中心，簡短地回顧這段歷史。
