隨著越來越多的水下遺址考古發掘活動,歷年來文物修護界也陸續發展出許多浸水木質文物的保存技術,聚乙二醇(polyethylene glycol,簡稱PEG)往往被視為保存浸水木質文物的標準修護用材:其中,又以聚乙二醇浸泡法(PEG impregnation)最為廣泛應用。本文以筆者過去執行的二件英國泰晤士河出土木柄鐵鋸修護案為例,探討在面對浸水複合媒材(waterlogged composites)的保存修護時,如何應用「二階段聚乙二醇浸泡+真空冷凍乾燥法」標準技術來保存浸水木質文物之外,關於其金屬複合物所需添加之防鏽劑亦是本文討論重點。

英文摘要

Various methods have been studied to treat waterlogged wood. Currently, the application of polyethylene glycol (PEG) is generally agreed to be the standard treatment. Two waterlogged wood-iron composite saws were found along the foreshore of the River Thames and were brought to the Museum of London for treatment. This paper presents the conservation processes from pre-PEG to post-PEG treatment. The aim of treatment was to stabilise the two saws by impregnation in a PEG solution, followed by freeze-drying. The use of corrosion inhibitors triethanolamine and ETX 6282 (Texaco) is also discussed.
