The planet earth and global civilization now confront a constellation of issues that threatens the very existence of both. There is a burgeoning literature which offers dire warnings and solutions, but museums are rarely, if ever, mentioned, indicating that the irrelevance of museums as social institutions is a matter of record. The dominant ideology of capitalism and the decline of public funding for museums have produced a harmful result for museums - characterized by the primacy of economic interests in institutional decision-making. Various reasons underlying the neglect of stewardship are examined, as are examples of exceptional museum stewardship. It is argued that a heightened sense of stewardship is the foundation for a sustainable future for museums, and that it is within the grasp of every museum to embrace this commitment. The meaning and purpose of museums are now in need of urgent redefinition, based on deep listening to the issues and challenges that confront the biosphere. |
