The Zhao'an Hakka people are concentrated in Yunlin County. They have lived in an area in which the Hoklo people are dominant, and have suffered discrimination. As a result, many Zhao'an Hakka have intentionally hid their identity and the Zhao'an Hakka dialect has gradually disappeared. The dialect and living style of the Zhao'an Hakka are fairly different from those of Cantonese Hakka ethnic groups, which compose the majority of the Taiwan Hakka. Therefore, the Zhao'an Hakka have been intentionally and unintentionally neglected by the major Hakka groups. To establish their Hakka identity, the Zhao'an Hakka have been eager to build a "Zhao'an Hakka Museum" since the Council for Hakka Affairs, Executive Yuan was established. However, many difficulties have been encountered in the planning process. After the adoption of the idea of an eco-museum, the focus has shifted to the development of the "Zhao'an Hakka Eco-museum". The aim of this essay is to introduce the Zhao'an Hakka and their problems of identity, as well as to discuss the process of planning the Zhao'an Hakka Park, including its transformation from a physical museum into an eco-museum. The author investigates how the concept of eco-museum is applied through a series of small projects in the Zhao'an Hakka area in Yunlin County, and scrutinizes how the decentralized Zhao'an Hakka Ecomuseum has become a collective work of the Zhao'an Hakka people, as well as a process for interpreting and establishing the Zhao'an Hakka identity. |
