The term "eco-museum" was first coined in France in 1971 to call people's attention to the serious damage and threat to the natural and human environments. The idea of ecological preservation has been rooted in people's minds since the First Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth century. This is evidenced by museums focused on folk or ethnographic preservation issues being established in Sweden and Germany at that time. The aim of this study is to explore how these two countries inspired France to develop the "eco-museum" concept especially as discussions regarding the preservation of folk arts and traditions did not start until 1937 and research in this domain was not considered of value until the 1970s in France. The creation of the term "eco-museum" led to the development of open air museums for folk or ethnographic preservation and to museums focused on industrial heritage. In this context, there unexpectedly arose a world movement toward local cultural esteem and cultural identity that lasted for more than a decade. |
