Continuous advances in technology and prevalence of computers, mobile phones and the Internet have facilitated substantial growth in information media, affecting how people browse for information and acquire resources. In the current era of digitization, the publication industry is faced with the problem of how novel media can be adopted to reposition conventional publications, including those published by museums, to disseminate information on the arts and humanities. In response to the current trend in digitalization, the National Palace Museum has initiated projects for creating a digital museum, establishing an institutional repository, and promoting open data. From images of and basic information on artifacts to video and audio records and research achievements, the museum has progressively granted public access to resources. Publications are essential tools used by museums to promote education. Therefore, preserving conventional museum publications under the current trend of digitalization, while demonstrating the uniqueness and necessity of such publications, is imperative. Taking the catalogue of A Special Exhibition of Painting and Calligraphy on Song Dynasty Decorated Paper organized by the National Palace Museum as an example, the problems, positioning, and transformation of printed museum publications are discussed. By examining the creative process and design of this catalogue, suggestions are offered for revitalizing conventional art publications. |
