Museums are responsible for preserving, researching, and exhibiting cultural heritage. Four buildings of the National Taiwan Museum are testaments to Taipei's urban development. How can museums represent the historical trajectory and restoration process of historic sites through exhibitions? What should be the main focus of such exhibitions? Which planning methods and design techniques should be used? The aim of this article is to attempt to address these questions by reviewing the historic site restoration exhibitions of the Natural History Branch, the Nanmen Branch, and the Railway Department Park of the National Taiwan Museum. Based on the results of field studies, three themes emerged: the site's history and corresponding socio-cultural contexts, architectural characteristics, and restoration process. As planning of these three branches took place during different periods, there was a shift in gradation of the discourse on the restoration process. With regards to exhibition design, visitors should be able to gain a clear and close understanding of architectural characteristics and the restoration process via architectural elements, documents, blueprints, and models. However, appropriate interpretation is needed to trigger reflection on the site's historical value. These exhibitions showcase architectural remains, construction methods, and equipment. Through such "in-situ exhibits" visitors are able to catch a glimpse of architectural features and gain an understanding of issues that arise during the restoration process. As these in-situ exhibits are scattered, to strengthen their bonds with the overall exhibition and to motivate people to visit, a narrative that is based on the historical trajectories of these sites should be adopted and accompanied by explanatory leaflets. It is hoped that the results of this review can serve as a practical reference for contemporary museums in their planning of relevant exhibitions and in the gathering of cultural heritage education momentum.
