The National Museum of Prehistory (NMP) in Taiwan was established to provide the public with an understanding of the richness and diversity of Taiwan's ecology and prehistoric and indigenous cultures through research, collection, exhibition, education, and recreation. Moreover, it strives to enhance awareness and encourage the public to cherish and respect the natural landscapes and cultures of this land. NMP temporarily closed in June 2020 to carry out building and permanent exhibition renovations. The aim of this article is to review the museum's special exhibitions on indigenous peoples held during the period 2001 to 2020, before the reopening of the museum. The "quantity" and "quality" of these exhibitions were analyzed based on statistics and relevant documents and records. From the results, these exhibitions possess the following attributes and characteristics: They present diverse themes that reflect contemporary life and the characteristics of eastern Taiwan. In addition, they fulfill social responsibilities and provide a voice, while creating international connections, empowering indigenous communities, cultivating indigenous artistic talent, and focusing on issues of transitional justice. By sorting out the genealogy of these special exhibition themes, a reference is provided for the future positioning and exhibitions of NMP, as well as for the exhibitions and operations of a future national museum of indigenous peoples.
