The present study used classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm in data mining to explore and classify the characteristics of age-friendly hospital staff with needs for active aging courses. A questionnaire survey design was used to investigate the staff in an age-friendly hospital in Chiayi County. Of the 892 questionnaire distributed, 867 (97.2%) were returned. Regarding the basic characteristics of the participants, 78.4 were females, 51.0% were under 35 years of age, 54.4% were being married, 67.2% had university level education, 45.6% were nurses. Of the five learning themes, the needs for courses on health maintenance were the greatest, followed by those on spiritual growth, personal safety, social life, and voluntary services. Results from the CART analysis of each of the five learning themes revealed that sex, job type, had participated in previous courses, age, and anticipated retirement time were the key variables affecting the needs for courses. Of these variables, sex was the most important variable. In conclusion, when age-friendly hospitals plan for active aging courses, the courses should be based on the characteristics of the participants to match their needs.
