Corporate sustainable competitive advantage and sustainability have been important issues in strategy and organization research. Their essence is to address the contradiction between the pursuit of efficiency and long-term adaptability. This study attempts to explore the ideological determinants of corporate sustainability. This study suggests that corporate sustainability depends on the top management’s advocacy of the business philosophy and core values and on the care of the key stakeholders on the one hand. On the other hand, the accumulation of managerial capacity and the professionalization of managerial functions emphasize rationality and efficiency. This study proposes two constructs, organizational familism and managerial professionalism, and suggests that the elements of the former are organizational identification, collectivism, and long-term orientation and that those of the latter are organizing capability, specialization, and accountability. This study further elaborates on the effects of different ideologies on corporate sustainability and proposes relevant propositions. Finally, this study also notes relevant suggestions for future research and managerial implications.
