This paper argues that Feng Meng Long consciously edited the vernacular stories to meet the different objectives that he had set for the different books that he had edited. The story of Huang Shan Cong appeared in three of Feng's books, namely Gu Jin Xiao Shuo, Zhi Nang Bu and Qing Shi. Yet, there were significant differences of Huang's story among these three books. This paper first analyzed the plot of these three Huang Shan Cong texts, in order to observe Feng's emphasis in each text. The second part of this paper discussed on the preface, commentaries of Feng's books (Gu Jin Xiao Shuo, Zhi Nang Bu and Qing Shi), to analyze Feng's objectives when he edited these books. The last part of this paper will combine the conclusion drawn in the previous two parts, and to propose that Feng indeed have different emphasis in different books, and that Feng will edit the stories accordingly, so that the stories will reflect the objectives that he aimed to achieve in his works.
