This paper examines the image of autumn in Xu Can's (徐燦, ?-?) poetry. Unlike other studies of Xu Can's work, which have mostly focused on her ci (詞, "lyric poetry"), this study examines her shi (詩, "poetry"), about which there remain many features requiring exploration and discussion. Xu's works about spring tend to be in ci form, whereas her works about autumn tend to be in shi form. For Xu, autumn is not merely a season but also an emotional symbol of an entire epoch. Xu Can was a famously talented woman who lived during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. She experienced the fall of the Ming dynasty and spent a long time in exile in Manchuria with her husband. Her north-south migration and the rich vicissitudes of her life experiences inspired many of her subsequent works. Xu Can's works featuring autumn both inherited as well as transformed established literary notions, and she imbued each word with feelings of personal significance. Additionally, from Xu Can's selection of "autumn" imagery, we can also understand the poet's thinking and re-evaluation of historical figures or events, and then see her uniquely feminine perspective and critical voice. Finally, through Xu Can's common nostalgic feelings in shi form about autumn, we also appreciate her delicate poetic sentiment, which she used to depict the gentle daily sorrows of women, as well as to express a strong love for her homeland and a historical sensibility that is no way inferior to that found in poetry written by men. |
