Development of Recommended assessment and management of sleep disordered breathing in patients with atrial fibrillation, hypertension and heart failure: TSOC/TSSM/TSPCCM joint consensus statement

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent and may be linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a bidirectional manner. However, the evidence supporting the association and causality is fully elucidated. To develop a scientific statement to guide clinicians in managing patients with SDB and CVD, the Taiwan Society of Cardiology, Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine and Taiwan Society of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine have produced a Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE)-based joint consensus on the assessment and management of SDB in patients with atrial fibrillation, hypertension and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Twelve clinical questions were organized into categories including prevalence and causation, diagnosis, and treatment. Afterward, 15 questions were formulated with the population/exposure/comparison/outcome (PECO) model for prevalence and causation, and nine questions were formulated with the patient/population/problem, intervention/ exposure, comparison, and outcome (PICO) model. Eventually, 11 recommendations are made to guide clinicians in determining which specific patient-care strategy should be utilized by clinicians based on the needs of individual patients.
