人文地理學者Tim Cresswell認為地方對人們具有意義，主要由生活事實、生活經驗、時間組構生成「某種方式依附其上」。換言之，「生活事實」是呈顯地方感重要的因素，展開房間、教室、電影院、公園等物質形式「實體」的想像，定位一己「置身那兒」的感知。對於空間〈space〉與地方〈place〉相互定義：空間是相對抽象、開放、客觀、動態的。地方則標示出以「經驗」為機制的主觀的空間感及時間感，傾向安全、穩定、靜止的區域。台北城內區在清朝後，成為新都市中心，台北“城內”從建城開始到經歷日治時代及國民政府來台至今，城牆內人文社會隨著各個不同時代不斷的變遷。城市場所充滿著因社會變遷的關係，對台北城內居民，生活空間充滿著共同的、不同的氣味及表記，人如何去經驗地方和理解地方。因此，本研究藉由台北城內唯一保留原貌的「北門」探討現象學中諾伯舒茲〈Norberg-Schulz〉場所精神的觀念及海德格〈Martin Heidegger〉有關存有理論與語言中論述從「空間」到「地方」的關係。

Humanist geographer Tim Cresswell believes that places are meaningful to people, and ＂a way to attach to it,＂ is through reality, life experiences, and time. In other words, ＂reality＂ is an important factor that gives a sense of place. It expands the imagination of physical forms such as rooms, classrooms, movie theaters and parks, which give the perception of ＂being there＂. Space can be defined as relatively abstract, open, objective, and dynamic. On the other hand, a place is subjective to space and time through different people's experiences, which tend to lean toward a safe, stable, and static area. After the Qing Dynasty, the inner urban area of Taipei became the new epicenter. Taipei's ＂inner city＂ continues to change with the times, from the beginning of the city's establishment to the time of the Japanese government and the arrival of the Nationalist government. Due to the evolving social changes, the residents of Taipei have a need to experience and understand different places. Thus, this study will use the original ＂North Gate＂ in Taipei City to explore the theory of Norberg-Schulz's genius loci of place in phenomenology and Martin Heidegger's discussion of existential theories and language on the relationship between space and place.
