Due to the different perspectives and theories, there are differences in the cognition of concepts and methods. This paper summarizes the factors that affect the three types of water carrying capacity, compares different water carrying capacity evaluation index systems, and analyzes the water carrying capacity from different perspectives applicability. The advantages and disadvantages of the traditional method and the new method are discussed, and the results show that the coupling of different methods will become an inevitable trend, the time scale, the water carrying capacity measurement on a longer time scale, and the basin and administrative division‐based measurement. Spatial scale becomes the main direction of future research.
