Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death throughout the world. Although modern medication for treating cardiovascular diseases can improve patient's survival, few of the treatment focused on promoting cardiac regeneration. As the fundamental problem for some cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction is the loss of cardiomyocyte, it would be more effective if the heart can regenerate itself. Immune cells especially macrophages have been pointed out to participate in cardiac repair process and inflammatory response after cardiac injury. As a result, this review will discuss the role of cardiac macrophage in cardiac regeneration.
