An Overview of Stroke Management in Vietnam: Experiences from Da Nang Hospital

Background: Stroke remains a significant health challenge in Vietnam, being the leading cause of death and disability. Da Nang Hospital, a first-class general hospital, is a primary referral center in central Vietnam, specializing in stroke care. The hospital established a dedicated Stroke Department in 2019, expanding from its previous Stroke Unit. The department has grown remarkably, reflecting an increasing demand for specialized stroke care and treatment. Method: This review examines stroke management at Da Nang Hospital, focusing on the department's development, patient demographics, and treatment protocols. Data from individual observational and cross-sectional studies conducted between 2010 and 2023, along with newly collected departmental statistics, are considered to assess changes in stroke incidence, patient outcomes, and treatment effectiveness. The implementation of early reperfusion therapy, including recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and endovascular thrombectomy, and the establishment of protocols for acute stroke management are highlighted. Additionally, the review explores the collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing stroke care. Conclusion: Over the years, Da Nang Hospital has made substantial progress in stroke management, as evidenced by the increased number of patients receiving reperfusion therapy and improved patient outcomes. The hospital's commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration has resulted in more patients receiving timely and effective treatment. The future focus on enhancing scientific research, international cooperation, and community health education aims to position the Stroke Department as a leading center for stroke care in Vietnam, aligning with global standards.
