From 20 - 21 November 2020, the Symposium on Marine Sustainable Development and Regional Cooperation was successfully convened in Xiamen, as part of a series of activities held during World Ocean Week in Xiamen. This Symposium was sponsored by the China Institute for Marine Affairs of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the School of Law of Xiamen University, organized by the South China Sea Institute of Xiamen University and the Center for Marine and Military International Law of the School of Law, Xiamen University, and co-sponsored by Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development and Fujian Institute of Marine Sustainable Development. During the Symposium, the present experts and scholars conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions centering on the following five topics: Conduct of marine scientific research, regional cooperation and dispute settlement; legal protection of underwater cultural heritage and regional cooperation; obligations of marine environment protection under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and regional cooperation practices; peaceful settlement of marine environmental disputes; and recent advance of maritime boundary delimitation and provisional arrangements before delimitation. Through systematic analysis of the current situation of marine sustainable development and regional cooperation and the accompanying challenges, this Symposium seeks to provide intellectual support for China's further realization of marine sustainable development and international cooperation.
