Objectives: The care pressure experienced by family caregivers is inversely proportional to their quality of life. Hence, family caregivers should be provided with additional care support services and educated about self-health management strategies to improve their physical and mental health. This study explored the learning process of and effect of a chronic disease self-management program (CDSMP) on family caregivers. We examined how they applied self-management strategies learned in the program. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for similar courses in the future. Methods: This study included caregivers who participated in a 6-week, 15-hour course conducted by a family caregiver support center in Taipei City. A total of 16 participants were included in a closed group. The study conducted course observations and analyzed the participants' reports. Results: The average age of the participants was 60 years. Most of them reported having sleep disturbances and reported that "emotional load" was the greatest care pressure they experienced. In the course, the participants developed action plans and applied the learned self-management strategies in their daily lives, including exercise, diet, breathing, and interpersonal interaction. In particular, the CDSMP provided a platform for mutual support and the sharing of health knowledge and skills, thus enhancing their self-efficacy. Conclusions: The CDSMP design and themes met the needs of the study participants. The participants shared and discussed health knowledge and adjust their self-health management strategies. The program enhanced the participants' health and emotional support. |
