To explore the soil moisture changes under different cover measures in the loess hilly region, large-scale soil columns were established in the Mizhi Mountain area of northern Shaanxi. The columns were covered with five plantations of bluegrass, alfalfa, caragana, jujube, and locust, four non-vegetated treatments of stones, branches, white film, and black film, and bare land. A total of 10 treatments were carried out to study the annual and vertical changes of soil moisture content in each 10 m soil layer. The results showed that, of the vegetation covers, the soil moisture content was the highest in the bluegrass cover and the lowest in the locust cover. The annual soil moisture content under the non-vegetated covers was higher than that of bare land, with levels of moisture retention in the following order: white film>black film>stones>branches. The soil moisture content of the 0-0.6 m soil layer changed greatly throughout the year, while it changed little in the 0.6-2.6 m soil layer. With mulching measures, the soil moisture content was highest in the 2.6-6 m soil layer. The soil moisture content was not affected by rainfall in the 6-10 m soil layer. Compared with plantations, the non-vegetated mulch had an effect on evaporation inhibition and moisture content addition, and white film had the best effect on the repair of the dry soil layer.
