Geling Yan's series of immigrant writing in the early 1990s carries the contemporary senses of diaspora, which is different from the rootless and disoriented atmosphere in the works of preceding writers. Yan's works have become important new resources for Chinese language literature studies. In the three stories Maroon Hairs, The Girl Xiaoyu and The Girl that Wears Flowers and the Alcohol Seller, Yan narrates language barriers to vividly and deeply present female immigrants in a foreign country. In a foreign culture, they could not express themselves completely due to language barriers. Through the narration, Yan depicts the setbacks, loneliness, and depression resulting from real life stress, emotional reliance for survival, and cultural identity. Yan chooses the most concrete images of language barriers to transmit the indescribable inner sentiment and raises questions regarding the enormous cultural value systems of the West and the East. Her works absolutely reflect a deep and meaningful reverse thinking of writing strategies.
