The immigrant writing in Geling Yan's works describes male immigrant's feelings with specific focus on cultural differences and deep awareness of isolations. For Yan, the special existent condition triggers the unusual sensitivity in humanity. By examining the description of isolation and feelings of rejection, resulting from life transplant ,portrayed in The Landlady and The Other Side of the Sea and by analyzing the historical construction and the description of the time and space of a century in Orange Blood and Modan, this article explores how Yan used the images of interfolding gazes and differences to express the confusions and difficulties in pursuing self-identity and autonomy via the description of multiple gazes of power and distinct sensitivity and awareness. Through the descriptions, Yan constructed a male immigrant identity with deep isolation and alienation.
