Shao Xian is a Mainland Chinese author who immigrated to Taiwan in 1949. During the early stage of children’s literature development in Taiwan, few people paid attention to children’s literature. With “Research on Children’s Literature by Shao Xian” as the title, the purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of children’s literature works by Shao Xian, taking into account his position in children’s literature development in Taiwan.
This study analyzes children’s literature creation by Shao Xian. First, it was found that his works were mainly aimed at the memory of childhood and his gratitude towards his hometown. However, Shao Xian’s works also create a vivid depiction of the emotional circulation of Taiwan’s new native land. Secondly, in the process of Taiwan’s industrialization in the 1980s and in view of the increasingly polluted environment, Shao Xian also displays his ecological consciousness and environmental concern. These rich feelings toward the real society express his recognition for Taiwan’s new native land. All in all, for Shao Xian who has been committed to primary school education throughout his life, the educational connotations naturally displayed through his children’s literature creation are his persistence, love and faith toward children’s education.
Through the writing in this study, Shao Xian who has long engaged in in-depth development of children’s education but has not yet received attention from Taiwan’s literature community is rediscovered, in the hope of ascertaining his position in children’s literature history in Taiwan.
