Industries in Taiwan had to face so many challenges such as global competition, product life cycle shortening, various small orders, and less production lead time. Lean six sigma (LSS) method was utilized by many manufacturers as an effective management solution, many companies thought the implementation of lean manufacturing might discover and improve blind spots of the existing production system. Eliminating waste in the workflow and reducing unnecessary efforts will enforce the capability of the overall supply chain. In such a case, the cycle time and material handling time may be shortened, the labor cost may be reduced, and the production cost may be decreased. Therefore, the goal of quality improvement, shorter deliver time, and higher customer satisfaction can be reached and enterprises will enhance their competitiveness.
This research discussed the implementation processes and procedures of the LSS, and the case study of a TFT-LCD module factory was illustrated to verify the effectiveness of LSS method. The DMAIC process was applied to improve manufacturing processes, and the value stream map (VSM) was used to find out non-value points in the processes, operation times were decreased to improve productivity. This research described applied methods and tools in detail, and also discussed the process and technique of transforming the current value stream to the future value stream in depth. The project results showed that the throughput of the module factory was increased with the same quality level; therefore, the production cost of the plant was decreased, and the effectiveness of the LSS method was verified.
