Plyometric training has become a popular training method for sports events which require power and jumping ability. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of plyometric training on basketball specific skills in female collegiate basketball players. Twenty players were randomly assigned into a control group (CG)(n=l0) and a plyometric training group (n=10). The plyometric training group (PTG) underwent training 2 days per week for a duration of 6 weeks. The control group performed general basketball skill training only. Tests used to assess specific basketball performance skills included the vertical jump, 4-point shuttle run, and power and strength of the lower extremities by squat jump (SJ) and counter-movement jump (CMJ). The paired t-test was used to examine the difference between pre- and post- test. The independent t-test was used to assess the difference between control and plyometric training groups. Pearson product moment correlation was used to establish relationships among testing variables. The results indicated no significant difference between control and training groups in vertical jump and 4-point shuttle run before the 6-week training. After plyometric training, the training groups demonstrated a significant decrease in 4-point shuttle run time (p<.05) which revealed that the less performing time and the improvment of speed and agility of players. The plyometric training group significantly improved in SJS, CMJS, and SJP (p<.05). The control group also improved in SJS and CMJS significantly (p<.05). In comparison of the two groups, there were a significant difference in CMJP at post-test. Pearson product moment correlations showed negative relationship between vertical jump and 4-point shuttle run, and no relationship between height of vertical jump and SJS, SJP, CMJS, and CMJP. In summary, 6 week duration of plyometric training is effective for improving the agility, speed, SJS, SJP, and CMJS in female collegiate basketball players except CMJP, and a negative relationship was found between the vertical jump and 4-point shuttle run. |
