Corpus-based studies are being increasingly used in translation studies with an attempt to uncover the universal features of translation language (Baker 1993, 1996: Laviosa, 1998; Kenny, 1999). Nevertheless, the technology-enabled, corpus-driven study is rarely used for the diagnosis of student translations in comparison with professional translations. Thus, the aim of this study is to use the corpus of professional translations as the criteria against which the corpus of student translations is evaluated. This study starts with an examination of the corpus of professional translations of product instructions to demonstrate the shared features of professional translation, including lexical simplification, structural explicitation and lexical conventionality of technical translated texts. After we identi1, the distinctive features of professional technical translations, student translations collected from the questionnaire are evaluated for our understanding of their strength and weakness. The implications of the result of the comparative evaluation are discussed and serve as the significant guidelines for the future modification of current training in student technical translation.
