貝爾氏麻痺是顏面神經（腦神經VII）的功能障礙所導致的一種面癱形式。大約有一半的面癱病例診斷為原因不明的“貝爾氏麻痺”。貝爾氏麻痺呈現為突發性單側的面部麻痺。常見表現包括眉下垂，鼻唇溝消失，無法閉上眼睛，並有嘴歪向健測等症狀。治療一般包括物理治療，皮質類固醇和抗病毒製劑。但約有三分之一的患者會有殘留後遺症。因此對於面癱患者，一個快速且有效的治療方式是必要的。許多病人因而紛紛轉向中醫，以尋求幫助。本病例為一名29歲的女性患者因在產後2週發生面癱而尋求中醫協助。在服用加減龍膽瀉肝湯後於僅僅兩週時間內獲得完全恢復。可提供貝爾氏麻痺一個有效的替代治療方式。

Bell's palsy is a form of facial paralysis resulting from a dysfunction of the facial nerve (the cranial nerve VII). About one-half of all cases of facial palsy qualify for the label ＂Bell's palsy,＂ defined as an acute peripheral facial nerve palsy of unknown cause. Bell's palsy presents with the sudden onset of unilateral facial paralysis. Other causes of peripheral facial nerve palsy include systemic viral infections, trauma, tumor, diabetes, and immunological disorders. Common symptomaticfindings of Bell's palsyinclude the eyebrow sagging, disappearance of the nasolabial fold, inability to close the eye, and the mouth drawn to the unaffected side. Treatments to speed recovery include physical therapy, corticosteroids and antiviral agents. But about one-third of patients may have incomplete recovery and residual effect. Thus, a quick, effective remedy is necessary for patients with facial palsy. Not surprisingly, many patients have turned to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to seek for help. We report a case of a 29-year-old female patient with Bell's palsy during postpartum period seeking TCM advice. The symptoms were fully recovered after taking Chinese herbal formulae which contains modified Long-Dan-Xie-Gan- Tang within only 2 weeks. This approach seems to offer an effective alternative treatment for facial palsy.
