筆者先敘述自己納英文小說於英美小說的理由。次說明教學方式由top-down改先從文字切入的心路歷程。文字切入文本時遭遇到的障礙。再從外來語、方言、專業用語的角度來舉例說明。例文涵蓋十三位近現代作家，如班揚、狄福、谷崎、狄更斯、Brontë姐妹、Doyle、譚恩美、趙健秀、小川樂、戈登、Groom、Waller等。
