In the year of 1960s, political climate and ideology tremendously influenced the literature community. At that time, a great deal of literature journals circulated around the local bookstores; “Modern Literature” was the only publication that was characterized by being strict, experimental and innovational. “Modern literature” provided a free and multi-faceted platform, which stimulates the studies on translation, writing, theories, and classical literature. “Modern Literature” solicits the articles by both local and foreign scholars, creating a brand-new trend in Taiwan literature. The present paper explores the historical meaning of ”Modern Literature” from the perspective of the developmental history of Taiwanese literature. By doing so, the paper aims to evidence the relationship between literature clubs and Taiwanese literature. The paper comprises four parts: I. Introduction; II. The external reasons of “Modern Literature”; III. The connotation of “Modern Literature; IV. Conclusion. The article principally explores the first phrase-51 issues for 13 years. We found the journal to be avant-garde. The members initialize the journal in pursuit of the nature and dignity of the mankind with the principle of being romantic. Four hundred writers, along with thousands of works, surely symbolize the romanticism and turmoil of the age. Without doubt, “Modern Literature” is the “literature miracle” in the history of Taiwanese literature. |
