詩人陳虛谷先生，生于日本統治時代，逝于終戰後的國民政府時代。在台灣的文學中，他是一位橫跨二個不同政權統治下的人。在文學的寫作上，他又是一位跨越新、舊文學形式的作家。他曾寫有漢語傳統舊詩，以及新體的小說、散文、新詩等作品，可說是具有多樣寫作才能的作家。其中，以漢語傳統舊詩存量最多，內容亦最廣。故本論文以其漢語舊詩爲主要論述依據，再參證其他的新體作品，藉以闡述其人的「情」與「義」（情感與理性），進而瞭解詩人多樣的人生及複雜的思想與行爲。全文分為：（一）仰天默默思身世（二）願學伊周不學仙（三）消磨志氣在家庭（四）情似千山萬重水（五）到老尤多兒女愁（六）此情值似籠中鳥等六項。透過這些分述的項目，讓我們得以深度認識詩人的多情與有義。畢竟文學作品，是作家生命的表現。特別是詩，更能透視詩人的純真心靈。

The poet, Mr. Chen Syu-gu, was born in Japanese Colonial Taiwan and died in post-war Nationalist Government Era. In Taiwanese literature, he was a man who strode across two regimes. In his creation of literature, Chen again went across the new and old literary forms. His literary creation comprised classical Chinese poetry, modern poetry prose and new type novels. We could say that he was a writer who possessed multiple talents for writing. Among his works, classical Chinese poetry was abundant in quality, and had extensive contents. Accordingly, this thesis is based on Mr. Chen's classical Chinese poetry, refers to other new form works, and so as to expound the writer's ”affections” and ”righteousness”, thus to better understand the poet's diverse life and his complicated thoughts and manner. The whole thesis is divided into: (1) Looking silently up to the the sky and thinking of life. (2) Rather being like Yi Yin and Chou Gon than being a hermit. (3) Consuming aspiration in family. (4) Emotions were as high as mountains and as long as rivers. (5) Worrying about posterity until old. (6) Affections were just like birds in the cage. Through these descriptions, we can see the poet's sentiment and righteousness. After all, literary works reveal the lives of writers, and poetry helps us further to penetrate poets' purified souls.
