Each group has it's own culture and language symbol distinctive. "Friendship" is one of the distinctive language symbols of Taiwanese opera performers. The so-called friend might be a devotee, a pal, a "xi- xiang", a sworn mother or sister, or maybe a lover. There are some informal taboos in this kind of relationship, for instance: if someone make friend with A "sheng", then he/she can't be close to B "sheng" simultaneously. This paper aims to analyze the notion of friend defined from a Taiwanese opera performer's standpoint. By fieldwork, through interviews and my observation , I hope to strictly present the meanings and taboos of "friendship" existing in the circle of Taiwanese opera, and find out the cause of taboos.
