英文摘要

New information technology is significantly altering business, institutions, schools and the ways in which people live and work. One of the most profound changes is in the educational delivery system. Distance education has become an important means of teaching and learning in schools worldwide. This article first introduces the attributes of distance learning, followed by discussing four generations of distance learning formats. The advanced distance education technology has the potential to create new learning experiences and increase learning opportunities significantly. With the advent of real-time multimedia communication technology, instructors and learners will be able to collaborate in a worldwide learning community, no longer restricted by geography or availability of rooms, instructors, or learners.
