攸關生死的工作：監所矯正人員戒護死刑犯之經驗探究

矯正人員在死刑舍房中易感到一種矛盾的安全感與壓力，在擔心暴力危害之虞，卻又發現此工作較為單純無變化。戒護死刑犯工作本身的特殊性與風險，對於矯正人員的工作熱忱及生命價值，甚至是內在心理歷程之轉換，在矯正體系專業上仍未受到關注。因此，本研究之目的在於瞭解矯正人員戒護死刑犯之經驗。以期深入探討在戒護死刑犯過程中，矯正人員如何賦予戒護工作意義？及其戒護死刑犯的過程中之因應？採詮釋現象學研究設計，深度訪談五位矯正人員。以主題分析法分析口述資料分為三大類屬：矯正人員為死刑執法中不可缺者、在戒與護間找個人因應之道。當資歷豐富的矯正人員調任至死刑戒護工作後，面對一樣的調動有著兩樣情，死刑舍房戒護經驗傳承也同時是在職訓練。亦彰顯世界潮流和政策對實務之阻礙，如頻繁職務變動對戒護增困擾、暫緩死刑執行增問題、身處中間角色之為難。矯正人員體會戒護工作費思量，因死刑犯無所畏、死刑犯特質多變異、戒護工作繁雜難預測、與死刑犯必須建立信任與溝通、團隊合作方能零事故。此外，孤單工作學因應也是特性，呈現在與死刑犯關係的亦友非友守界限、堅守執法原則不動搖、戒護甘苦獨自嚐、學習抒壓再出發、安穩公職怯變動。依據研究發現，提出未來研究可朝矯正人員之個人特質、探討矯正人員發展專業自信與專業自我之優勢，和提供更多關於新進或在職訓練之經驗傳承機會。

Little research has explored the challenges faced by Taiwanese correctional officers who work with death row inmates. The purpose of the present study was to explore how correctional officers perceive the stress of working with death row inmates. A hermeneutic-phenomenological approach was used to gain in-depth narratives from five Taiwanese correctional officers who work with death row inmates. The themes that emerged were organized into two main categories. The first category was characterized as ”needed staff in criminal justice,” and it included two themes: facing new challenges and debatable policies related to the death penalty. The second category was characterized as ”finding balance between restriction-oriented and safety-oriented approach” and it included two themes: job stress and loneliness of work. Implications and recommends for future study are discussed.
