”Cha-Chiu” was formed in the mid-Qing Qianlong period. Originated from the military, it's a kind of narrative music that has strong musicality and independent melody. The lyrics, influenced by the writing of classical Chinese poetry, are simple and elegant. ”Cha-Chiu” has its own fixed form that requires the ending tone of each lyric descend, and the melody is sung according to the tune of the lyrics. Each Cha-Chiu follows the rule so it can be sung based on the lyrics without the score. The author of Cha-Chiu ”Wind and Rain to the Boat” used its superior writing skills to vividly describe the landscape of the main character's seclusive life in mountains. The singing way of this piece is very flexible, changeful and full of strong musicality, which makes it still one of the most commonly performed songs. This paper discusses the four aspects of ”Wind and Rain to the Boat”, including its historical background, lyric structure, music structure, and musical characteristics, and anticipates to probe into the meaning of its music.
