Jared French (1905~1988), one of the most important American artists in the middle of the twentieth century, nurtured his own creations with the Renaissance and archaic arts, envisaged and incubated his general conception under the framework of Carl Gustav Jung's ”collective unconscious”, and utilized mythological symbolism and character design to develop his own individual visual-artistic language. Never taking heed of the constantly changing art trends, he was utterly absorbed in fulfilling his own artistic schemes and completely devoted himself to demonstrate various manifestations of the human mind. Extraordinary visual perception was processed and fabricated under his imaginative driving force; in addition, his own incorrigible perfectionism made each of his stylistic paintings full of robust implications. With ”depersonalization” prevailing in the twentieth century, French insisted on employing diverse classical, harmonical, and majestical images to weigh almost everything in his works. The purpose of this paper is to re-discover and to re-interpret the paintings and drawings of Jared French, and to re-introduce this rare genius shrouded in oblivion. His unique visions and impeccable techniques created such an enchanted symbolic system of physical mythology that we feel fascinated and will all contemplate. |
