The purpose of the paper is to explore the workplace challenges of novice social workers without professional supervision. Six research participants were selected by both snowball sampling and internet recruiting. The main findings are as follows: (1) Recognition of social workers as one type of professionals had not been developed well. (2) The lack of professional supervision not only affected service provisions, but also increased the social workers' sense of frustration and lowers their self-esteem. (3) Social workers primarily sought help from informal personal networks and internet information to secure professional suggestions. Strengthening the link between novice social workers without supervision and professional organizations was essential. (4) The turnover intentions of social workers depended on working conditions, potential capacity of organizations, and personal career planning. Finally, suggestions for novice social workers, social service organizations, professional associations and governments were presented. |
