For James Joyce, metaphor has been one of the major structural and thematic principles of Ulysses, assimilating truth into his work. Joyce revitalizes metaphors to play out the many-faceted reality. Trying to make metaphors represent points of view and strengthen the illusion of self-sufficiency, Joyce utilizes both historical allusions and the styles he parodies to define the fundamental relationship between words and reality in Ulysses, Besides, metaphors built upon the mundane, typically music and food, show how Joyce has established a bridge for people around the world to enter the Irish world, thus globalizing the Irish experience while localizing the universal.
