Some expressions of the ['you' (to have) + a bare noun] structure lose their grammatical legitimacy when they are modified by the adverb 'hen' (very) to show emphasis on the degree. Different ['(hen) you' + a bare noun] expressions give contrasting readings on the ”stage-level” or ”object-level”. The phenomenon in Mandarin is assumed closely related to the semantic types of nouns used in the structure. In this paper, nouns are divided into several categories and sub-categories according to their different kinds of references: people, objects, materials; personal characteristics; (mental) states; physical problems; and thoughts and events. By applying each (sub)-category to the ['(hen) you' + a bare noun] structure, it is found that the co-occurrence of 'hen' and 'you' is allowed only in personal characteristics and (mental) states sub-categories. An application of the notion of ”accumulation” suggests a reasonable explanation why only the object-level reading is implied when the personal characteristics sub-category is used.
