Eccles(1983)的期望－價值理論以一系列的心理及社會／文化因素，整合許多理論對於期望與價值信念的分歧概念，對個體成就行為與動機的探討，提供新的觀點。根據Eccles等所發展的期望－價值理論的概念，任何會影響個體期望與價值的因素都會影響個體成就行為的選擇、表現和持續。本文主要焦點在於描述期望與價值的概念、結構、以及過去研究發現。對期望與價值概念的瞭解，不僅有助於瞭解影響運動參與的心理因素，對於應用上也有實質的幫助。整體而言，期望與價值的概念為運動領域成就行為的探討，開啟了一個更廣闊的視野。
