運動之後的恢復期仍持續做較高的耗氧稱為運動後過攝氧量,影響EPOC的因素包括了肌肉中PC的再合成、乳酸移除、身體溫度的增高,體內激素的增高等等因素,所以身體的基本代謝機制也會影響EPOC。另外EPOC還有快速期和慢速期兩個階段。雖然一些研究表明,EPOC可能會持續幾個小時,但也有其他學者得出結論認為EPOC的持續期間非常短暫。這矛盾的結果,如果考慮了運動強度和持續時間就可以解決EPOC測量上的問題。也因為如此,EPOC在強度較低或是運動持續時間較短的運動不明顯,像是阻力運動對於EPOC的關係至今仍不明確,但是在有氧運動方面,EPOC取決於運動持續時間和運動強度這兩種因素,許多學者共同研究的結果找到了關係曲線,發現有氧運動在越高強度或是越長運動時間可以讓EPOC的曲線更為線性且明顯。另外可以在數學公式中以運動設計中的VO2MAX%或運動持續時間來預測EPOC,而不用在運動之後再另外測量EPOC的生成量。將來要做EPOC相關研究的時候,運動強度、運動持續時間、運動型式等皆是必須要考慮的因素。
