Su Shih (1036-1101) was so obsessed with ”Sea” that he went to live in the Hainan Island surrounded by the sea when demoted during the latter part of his career. Heavily relying on rich characteristics of ”Sea” images (isolated space, endless universe, beautiful scenery, free spirit, and reborn environment), he chronically presented his poor living situation before the end of his life. His emotional changes can be traced from sensation to understanding, adaptation, and happiness. From here, we can view his mind deeply during his stay in Hainan and his appreciation toward the beauty of ”Sea”. This paper also conducts content and skill comparisons between poetry and Ci-poetry in order to explore the similarities and differences about the beauty of ”Sea” image described in his poems and Ci-poems.
