An ”exhibition” is a way for a creator to show his/her own work in a public manner. For the creator, holding an exhibition is not only the concrete expression of the results of his/her creation, it is also a way to exchange information and get feedback from other people.
Every photography exhibition is the concrete expression of a creator's works, and each work holds potential, and may include a great masterpiece. Therefore a photography exhibition possesses a value that deserves to be preserved. But a physical exhibition is restricted by the site limits, and can only be held at a specific time and space. To archive photography exhibitions, and give future generations the chance to appreciate them, the most frequently used method is to publish paper photo albums of the exhibition.
In the past, works of photography were mainly archived using silver halide photographic paper, but since the publishing quantities of paper photo albums was limited due to the expense and market scope, they were usually published in quantities of less than a thousand copies. Due to the fact that paper photo albums were made in limited quantities, as time passed, they were fated to disappear from the shelves of bookstores, and paper photo albums in a small number of library collections or personal collections could go missing or get damaged. Paper photo albums are limited by publishing quantities and storage locations, causing so many excellent photography exhibitions to only exist in the memories of people in the previous generation.
Digital data possesses unlimited reproducibility. It can be stored on hard drives, and burned onto recordable disks for storage. And website content can be freely downloaded, allowing viewers to transfer the files to be viewed on their personal computers. Digital image data can be reproduced an unlimited number of times. It is not limited to being broadcast at one time and one place. Therefore using digital technology to archive photography exhibitions will necessarily become a future trend.
Through digital archives of photography exhibitions, it is hoped that a space for image creators can be established on the Internet for mutual observation and study. At the same time, excellent photography education websites can help beginning photographers to understand the creative concepts of photography, and in this way advance Taiwan's visual culture.
